The Army Values are the foundation of the U.S. Army's ethical and professional standards. They consist of seven core values that guide soldiers in their duties and interactions:
Loyalty – Staying true to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit, and fellow soldiers.
Duty – Fulfilling your responsibilities and doing what needs to be done.
Respect – Treating others with dignity and valuing diversity.
Selfless Service – Putting the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your team above personal interests.
Honor – Living up to the Army's values and maintaining integrity.
Integrity – Doing what is right, legally and morally, even when no one is watching.
Personal Courage – Facing fear, danger, or adversity with confidence and resilience.
These values are instilled in soldiers during Basic Combat Training and serve as the moral compass for their actions throughout their careers. They shape the Army's identity and ensure that soldiers uphold the highest standards of professionalism and service.
These principles, these Army Values, were listed here verbatim; they are already that concise and to the point. While developed for the military they represent basic good human values by which a person should live.
These values are instilled into individuals who are soldiers and are also values held by the civilian workforce. It is an attitude held within the spirit of the units. The Army Values represent a good way to live one’s life and work with others to provide good product and services.
The first letters of the Army Values are a mnemonic LDRSHIP. This in itself can be interpreted as “Leadership.” Those who believe in and utilize Army Values do, indeed, represent the leadership values and skills that are paramount to the United States Army. And these can make a person into one representative of a Portrait of Character.
