Phyllis Treloar (1898 - 1918) was a young woman from a family of miners. A Newton High School graduate working in the mining company general store, she became a nurse during the Spanish Flu epidemic. Phyllis cared for the many who were sick, tending to those in the overflow beds at the Neighborhood House. She died in the service of her needy fellow towns people.
Phyllis passed away at 10am on Thursday October 24, 1918 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Treloar on Church St, blessed by Reverend Paul J. Strohauer of the Franklin Presbyterian Church and was buried in North Church Cemetery.
She has been remembered. The Phyllis Club of Franklin operated with the mission of helping the needy in the community for many years. The organization became the Wallkill Valley Women’s Club. The essential spirit of the life of Phyllis has continued for more than a century to help our fellow community members.
